This popular chain has a location across from the Valley Fair Mall. Inside, you'll find an open dining area that is decorated in pastels, yet dimly lit and somewhat romantic. The menu is as eclectic as the décor, with options that include crab cakes, a calamari and artichoke dish, and chocolate whiskey cake. President Bill Clinton once dined at the California Cafe's Los Gatos location. A superb Sunday brunch is available.

DOWNTOWN. This downtown Mexican cantina provides an inviting environment for patrons, complete with flowers, wall murals, pottery, and, most importantly, a lively waitstaff. Chacho's is a popular lunch spot for members of the business crowd, and their diverse menu ­ burgers, fries, and an awesome Mexican á la carte menu ­ makes sure that everybody feels welcome. Most of the dishes are relatively inexpensive, and it's worth it to save a little room for dessert.

DOWNTOWN. Il Fornaio, located in the Sainte Claire Larkspur Hotel and near the Convention Center, is actually part of a restaurant/bakery chain. The Old World elegance of this restaurant is unmistakable ­ stylish décor marked by high ceilings and a cozy fireplace and a menu that is second to none. Entrées include several seafood dishes, including lobster ravioli and grilled fish. Il Fornaio also offers excellent breakfast pastries and Italian roast coffee. Reservations are suggested.

NEW ALMADEN. Located about 15 miles southwest of downtown in the New Almaden area, La Forêt is the recipient of a fair amount of national attention. The restaurant is housed in a beautiful building that dates from the mid-19th century and mixes refinement (tuxedoed waiters) with charm (cushioned chairs and white tablecloths). Chef Davoudi's specials include innovative game dishes like ostrich or wild boar. La Forêt also offers such gourmet staples as cold-water lobster or rack of lamb. This Los Gatos bistro serves traditional French cuisine in a dining area that is reminiscent of a French country home with its latticed walls, Impressionist artwork, candles and several plants. Owner/chef Valdez offers truly sublime fish and seafood entrées, and his fillet of lamb covered with a Portobello sauce offers a nice alternative. For dessert, save a little room for their excellent cappuccino crunch. Reservations are required.
